These are the recollections of the Senju Sanada Heise, The Monkey Sage.

Episode 2: The Monkey & Jaguar

“Mei-Lee and I weren’t always so close. Her father and My Father were rivals. Which meant, so were we.”

The first day of the academy during the year of my entrance was tense. Unlike most normal academy years there’d been a storm brewing of the past few week that wouldn’t cease to end. I’d been downstairs waiting on my father who’d manage to sleep his whole morning away. My mother had been off in the kitchen working up some new recipe one of her “friends” had given her. The Sanada clan, or at least my family as I remembered them, were a very reclusive bunch of ninja. In fact, had they not been sent on missions you would have never known they were ninja. They often refrain from using jutsu or wearing any form of garb that resembled a Ninja. They were in fact regular old folk. By 10 A.M My frustration levels had peaked and I ran upstairs to my father’s room and jumped on the bed.
“Wake Up you old man it’s the 1st day of school!” I yelled. He placed bother his hands on his face in discomfort. After a few more pounces, the old man finally agreed to get up and get ready. I rushed downstairs at sat at the breakfast table and scarfed down the food quicker than my mother putting it down. She didn’t say much. My mother wasn’t much of a talker. But I still her humming away her song, And placing her fingers through my hair and reminding me she loved me and to be careful.
The old man and I eventually made our way down to the Academy though as we entered we noticed families leaving. That’s when I recognized her, Mei-Lee that is. She was 6 or 7, maybe 7 if i’d been 6 that year. Her hair was unusually long and black for her age. Her parent’s hadn’t allowed her to cut it. And her eyes were moonlight white. If my father hadn’t said anything, I wouldn’t have recognized her father who’d was standing right next to her.
“Hyuuga Tokuyo. Long time no see buddy!” My father said cheerfully. My father took everything lightly. I wondered if I’d ever seen my father upset at all actually. But Mei-Lee’s father was the clear opposite. A total twin to his daughter though sterner and more meaner.
“Monkey of the Sanda” He replied bitterly. I looked at my father confused by the name. He only laughed it off and rubbed his head.
“Tokuyo, no need for such formalities.” Dad replied to the man.
“You’ve been neglecting the Shōbōgenzō. Sanada.” He said.

It may have been the first time I heard that word. Shōbōgenzō. It wouldn’t have been the last either.
“No need to discuss work right now Hyuuga Tokuyo.” My father said suddenly sound a bit more serious. My eyes returned to Mei-Lee who hadn’t taken her attention away from me. She’d even blushed. I turned my head away embarrassed.

“You need to return to your duty. Don’t make me come after you.” Tokuyo threatened. My father grinned with excitement. It was one of the times where I noticed how happy he was was.
“I’m waiting on it, Jaguar of the Hyuuga.”  A bit of tension sat between the two of them for a moment then Tokuyo grabbed Mei-Lee’s hand.
“Goodbye” She said softly as her and her father walked away.

My father bent over and like the monkey he’d just been called conversed with me.
“Special girl huh son?”
It was then the anger from all of the morning had built up inside of me and decided to release itself in my fist.
“YOU IDIOT!!!!!” I yelled as I punched my father face first into a tree.
But my father was right about her. She was special.

“What are you writing about?” Mei-Lee asked as the two sat on the wall overlooking the entirety of the Leaf Village. Heise like always took a moment to breathe while letting the ink dry, then returned the book back to a closed position. He turned his head and looked at Mei-Lee who smiled back to him.
“You’re home” Heise said ignoring her comment. Mei-Lee sat quiet for a moment wondering should she pursue the conversation. Better judgement told her not to.
“We’re home.” She said as she breathed in the clean air.

Heise smiled as his eyes landed on the Ichiraku Ramen shop.
“Hey, do you remember that Restaurant. There are about 8 different ramen shops in Konoha and we always went to that one.” Heise said with a laugh. Mei-Lee rolled her eyes.

“I hated that store. I swear that old man alway had it out for me” She pouted. Heise soon would burst into laughter remembering all the pranks he and the old man played against Mei-Lee.

“Because you never smiled. You were always quiet. We just wanted to make you smile. Even if it meant making you eat the spiciest Ramen available !!!!” He laughed. Mei-Lee turned red and turned her head away.
“Yukimura YOU JERK!” She yelled as she punched him.

There was a brief pause as Heise heard the name called out again. His eyes drifted off to a time when he could remember being called that.
Mei-Lee grabbed his hand arm and pulled him in close.
“I’m so sorry” She said.

Heise placed his free hand on Mei-Lee’s head and smiled.
“When we first met. You were blushing.”
“I still Am Dummy.” She muttered.

Hyuuga Residence:
“Are you sure about this?” Heise said as he stood in
front of the gates to the Hyuuga Residence. Next to him stood Hyuuga Mei-Lee blushing and biting her thumb. I

“You know, When you bite your thumb it’s usually never a good thing.” Heise said as he breathed in a breathe of fresh air.
The Hyuuga had long since updated their clan quarters. Along with the added housing, a Giant sized castle hovered over the back of their homes. The castle was always held by the top Hyuuga family and often times there would be battles for the head of house. Currently, Hyuuga Mei-Lee’s family held the honor of holding the castle.
“This is going to be one interesting day” Heise said as he and Mei-Lee moved forward towards the castle. A crowd slowly began to form and follow behind them.
