~ x - VII : D-Ranked Mission: Ravens aren't Crows - x ~

Option C - Lost Pet:
- Someone has lost their pet and needs help finding it work alone or work as a team in order to obtain the animal in order to complete the task.

“Well, you see it was a gray Raven….” Chiasa seemed to zone out as the woman at the animal shelter spoke to her sensei. Shoji had accepted a contract for them to find a lost animal, a Raven it seems. This was not something that she was interested in honestly. Chiasa failed to see how rescuing a bird had any effect on her growth as a shinobi. She didn’t agree to become a Genin just so she could spend her day trying to find lost kittens or puppies.

“Chiasa, are you listening? This is for your sake and not mine. You’ll be the one out there trying to retrieve Kori.” Shoji stated in a stern tone. Chiasa looked at him, sighed and rolled her eyes.

“No, I wasn’t, but how hard can it be to find a Grey Raven? They are usually black and scavengers. If we are to find this bird our best bet would be to start off someplace where there are a lot of corpses.” Chiasa stated, in a bored and monotone type of way.

Shoji sighed at his pupil’s devil may care attitude. “Sorry, about that, Iona. You know how teenagers can be sometimes.” Shoji looked back at Chiasa, whom just looked outside, looking outside, through the one of the windows.

Iona, the shelter owner laughed, “Oh don’t worry about it, Shoji. We were all teenagers before. Besides, I still recall the day that an 18-year-old kid came under my guidance.” She responded, warmly. Shoji blushed slightly at her words. Chiasa could tell that there was some history between the store owner and her teacher, although nothing romantic or sexual it seems. Most likely it was professional.

“So, you were his teacher, Ms. Iona?” Chiasa asked as she moved away from the window and towards the counter where the two of them stood. Iona smiled and laughed.

“Wow, Shoji told me you were intuitive, but his words gave you no justice. That’s right I was his teacher nine years ago, back when I was still a Jounin. If you can believe it, he was a lot angrier back them. I’m so proud that he as shown such much emotional growth.

Although Iona was correct, Chiasa didn’t believe it. Shoji-Sensei barely took anything seriously and was always laughing everything off. It annoyed her. “Really? You’ll have to tell me about it sometime, but We should really be going so we can find your Raven. My mother will most likely, have chores of her own that she would want me to do as soon as I get home.” Chiasa said back warmly. Iona nodded and lead them to the front door.

“Oh, and by the way, Shoji. The Raven’s name is Koki not Kori. Calling him that will probably upset him.” Iona said concerning Shoji’s earlier mispronunciation of Koki’s name. Shoji chuckled softly and headed out the door with Chiasa.

“So Chiasa, this is probably your first time carrying out a mission, but you are going to have to decide how to handle this,” Shoji said as the two of them walked out of the village. She wished he was wrong. She recently had to carry out an assassination of someone she had grown close to, which still tugged at her heart strings; she was just good at hiding her emotions. Hopefully, this mission would take Kojuro off her mind.

“Fine, I say that we go to the old farm and see if they have any old carcass that we can use as bait. As I mentioned before Ravens are scavengers and the smell of rotting flesh should draw it out.” Shoji nodded in approval of her plan. It was something that he was going to suggest anyway.

“Good job, Chiasa. Keep developing your mind tactically and you will go far.” He complimented. He noticed that she was a lot less confrontational lately. Sure, she was defiant still, but she didn’t curse him out today. She seemed like she was lost in her thoughts, trying to find out who she was. “As good as she is at hiding her emotions, she can’t hide them from someone whose been in the same position. Non-Verbal’s gives us away every time.” Shoji thought to himself. He wanted to offer help, but he figured it is best if she were to find her way on her own and offer support if she needed it.

“Well, yer justin luck.” The farmer said to Chiasa as she tried her best to breath through her mouth. The smell was so overwhelming; she didn’t know how anyone can stand its stench of barnyard animals. “I’ve got a slaughter’d hog that I’m willin’ to part wit. Meat’s no good for people noways.” He stated as he leads the two of them to the carcass. “But, it looks like yer goin to be catchin a bird any how, so I’m guess’n it all works out for yer.” Chiasa just wanted to grab the meat and leave. She couldn’t stay in this place anyway longer. The farmer gave them a medium sized slab of the carcass. It was bloody and messy, but she didn’t care. It was the smell that bothered her. Chiasa and Shoji thanked the farmer for the slab of meat and headed back to the fields.

A few hours had passed since Chiasa and Shoji had placed the slab of pig meat in the fields to draw out the Raven, Koki. Shoji and Chiasa remained hidden in a bush as to not alert the bird should it take the bait. “By this time every Raven in the village should be catching a smell of that rotting meat,” Shoji stated as Chiasa covered her nose with both hands. It was no use. The odor was so strong that she could practically taste it. Shoji chuckled lightly. “Next thing we will train on is your sense of smell. Your nose is way too sensitive, Chiasa.” She glared at him shortly and moved her eyes back to the slab of meat. “There it is. I was wondering why you were being so nice today. Well, nice for you I suppose….”
Chiasa sighed. “I just had something on my mind. It still is, it’s just that this smell makes it hard to think. Although, I suppose it’s a good think that I’m not able to overthink right now.” She retorted. “Don’t worry sensei. I’ll be back to my confrontational self shortly.” Just as she finished speaking she heard the call of what sounded like a flock of crows. Chiasa listened carefully. “Crows…Not Ravens.” She said aloud. She wasn’t an expert on birds, but through her reading, she discovered that there is a difference between Ravens and Crows. Not only in their bird call’s but also in how they are grouped. “Ravens don’t travel in flocks either. Usually just two of them.” She sighed and never left the bush.

“Impressive, I didn’t even know that. Here I was about to prepare to capture the wrong species.” Shoji chuckled. However, not long after they heard the Crow calls they heard another single, solitary bird call. They both prepared themselves as it sounded slightly different from the flock of crows. “This must be our Raven.” Shoji said as he began to make hand seals.

They both watched as the large Grey Raven scared away the flock of crows from the fresh pig meat that laid in the middle of the plains. Chiasa got a good look at Koki. They were close enough for her to notice a scar that the bird had gotten at some point through its life. The way it handled itself around a flock of crows was evidence that Koki new how to handle a battle. Chiasa was impressed, she never thought about it before. But a companion like Koki could help her out on assassinations. The thought of her job, sent her into a state of semi-depression.

“He’s definitely not your average bird, so I’ll have to paralyze him,” Shoji stated as he finished the last of his hand seals. “Genjutsu: Body Paralyzes Jutsu” Chiasa watched as the Raven stopped in his tracks. She was surprised that he used just a high-level Genjutsu on Koki, but then again even she knew that it may have been the only way to capture him. “Okay let’s get him back to Iona. Good job with the plan, Chiasa.” | 1396 words |
