“Bird of the sun
Destructive
Yet, intriguing” – Haiku by Ai Jiin, Priestess of the Sun Bird Temple
“It is so beautiful, but why does it have to destroy everything that it sees.” A young woman with said softly as she watched a massive bird of flames take to the skies. “It’s hard to imagine something so magnificent so dangerous.”
“I know, its exciting right?” and other voice yelled out. The girl turned around and scolded the approaching woman. “Rei, don’t you have duties you should be attending to. Its rude to sneak up on me like that.” Rei’s eyes widen as the girl spoke to her, “Wait a minute. Just because you are my older sister does not give you right to treat me like shit, Ai.” She scoffed back at her older sister. Ai glared at Rei. She knew better than anyone how Rei felt when she spoke like she was better than her, “Watch your words, Rei. You will not speak vulgarly in the temple. What you do outside is your business, but in here you will respect your elders.” The more and more Rei listened to her sister the more and more frustrated she became. “ELDER?!?! AI, you are 2 and a half years older than me. Stop acting like a fucking saint all the time. I’m sure you are the most corrupt one out of us all here!” Rei shouted. Her voice would echo through the long hallways of the temple and into a room where two other girls, around the same age were reading.
“It looks like our older sisters are at it again, Kasumi. I don’t get it. If they hate each other so much, why don’t they just stay out of each other’s instead of fighting all the time?” Kasumi shook her head at her sister’s question. “I have no idea, Ayame. Strange how you and I are only four and yet we have more maturity than our older sisters. Father is not going to like this at all. He has mentioned time and time again that those two need to avoid each other, but I don’t think that will ever happen.” The two girls sighed and got back to reading, praying that their father would brake up the fight that was soon to take place down the hall. “Poor, Rei…” Ayame stated. “It must be hard to try to live up to your older sister. Ai’s accomplishments are amazing and Rei has to try to keep up with her. Its times like this that makes me happy I am your twin, Kasumi.”
There was truth to Ayame words. Ai was the oldest and obviously most love out of the four sisters. Rei, a black haired child, tended to get the worst out of their father. Who was a heavily religious man with long black hair. He was very intimidating as noted by the people of the village. Rei really wasn’t cut out for the temple girl life. She wanted more excitement in her life. At the innocent age of six Rei was busy sneaking out of the temple at night and hanging with the children of a nearby village. However, her father was not ignorant of this and fully understood where she was heading out. He would quickly disown Rei. A disobedient girl was no child of his.
Ai on the other hand was his favorite. The only thing she had in common with Rei was their Black Hair. She never complained, she listened and did what her father instructed, a complete opposite from Rei. Ai was also a talented sealing specialist. Truly her list of accomplishment at such a young age was truly impressive. Obviously this would bring tension between the two girls. Although Rei would never admit it, she was jealous of all the attention that Ai got. Even her younger sisters Ayame and Kasumi received much more attention than she did.
Ayame and Kaumi were a lovable bunch. Their father was not nearly as hard on them as he was to his two eldest daughters. The twins both had red hair. The only way to tell them was the fact that Kasumi kept her hair long, while Ayame wore short hair. You could tell that their father babied them a lot.
“You know that Ai? You can go fuck yourself, because I am tired of this damn family!” as Rei turned around to storm out of the room she bumped into her father. She didn’t even need to look at him to know that he was scolding her. She could feel his eyes on the back of her head. “So you are still bothering you sister again, Rei? I will not have this in the temple. Go to your room and do not come out until I say so. You are a bane on this family’s existence.” His words hurt her, but she refused to show it. It was talking all she could to fight back the tears. Without saying a word she ran out of the room and into her room. [ 843 words ]
