Nature under the Waterfall

It was the power that Shan wanted. In fact, as Shan watched, he noticed a strange…aura around Radi. His chakra was evident around him but the shade of blue seemed off. It felt more like it was water surrounding him than chakra.

Shan walked forward slowly, not wanting to disturb the powerful man in whatever jutsu he was casting. The clouds swarmed in even greater number, blocking out the sun as they did so. His upright hand waved in the air momentarily, creating a multitude of shapes that Shan didn’t recognize. Rain began to pour. Yet…it didn’t hit the ground. The water fell from the clouds and came towards the ground but stopped short, reversing direction as it flew towards his palm.

It circled his palm, his arm, and then his entire body forming a shape as it do so.  It was the shape of a….turtle. A giant water turtle swam in the air, until Radi turned his hand and slammed it downwards towards his side.

The turtle took a swift dive downwards into the ground. As it hit, water exploded outwards in a furious spray. The water seemed to smash through the ground, boring a hole in it with the force of it. As it did, it splashed across the ground, spraying Radi – who now stood before a giant hole – and even Shan who was still ten feet back.

Now muddy, Shan took another step getting even closer. The young boy had to remind himself that he belonged here just as much as Radi did. He also had Turtle Summons, after-all. Zari was one of his most trustworthy companions – partially because he could call him at will.

“You again, brat?” Radi said as Shan approached. Shan hesitated. How long had he known he was walking up there and why hadn’t he said anything? “I suppose you’ve come to learn about that power that they mentioned I have?”

“Yes.” Shan said, hesitating a little bit. This man was far more terrifying than the young boy would ever admit.

“Tch. Figures. I told them you weren’t a good fit but they went on and on about their rules. Found our secret lair…blah blah blah. Well, whatever. This is on them, now. If it fails, I take no blame.” Radi said dismissively as he jumped into the hole.

Shan shrugged as he made his way through the mud and jumped into the hole. Inside, he found Radi communicating with the same very large turtle that Shan had learned was the leader of the tribe. This time, they weren’t arguing. In fact, they both looked at Shan expectantly.

“Blonde Turtle.” Akupara said in his slow and booming voice. “I hear you wish to attain more power from us. I do not judge. That is your right..”

Akupara paused, which gave Radi the opportunity to jump in. “You aren’t ready, so I volunteered to be the one to teach you the Sage Mode of the turtles. “

“You volunteered because I wasn’t ready? That doesn’t make any sense.” Shan said in puzzlement. Radi despised Shan. Why would he help him?

“It does. If one fails this task, then they will die.’ Radi said confidently. Shan looked towards Akupara for confirmation. The giant turtle nodded its head – and it showed sadness in its dinner plate eyes.

“That is the cost. You do not have to do this.” Akupara said sadly. Shan got the feeling that the turtle didn’t understand Shan in the slightest.

This sage mode was power. Shan wouldn’t give up on power – even at the cost of his own life. Shan nodded his head towards Radi. “Teach me. Don’t be afraid of me when I master it ten times faster than you did, though.”

Radi laughed that horrendous laugh of his as he waved further down the cave, past Akupara. Shan followed him and – as they walked – he heard a waterfall. It didn’t take long before Shan realized that the waterfall was their destination.

Radi directed him towards it. “Sit. Meditate.”

Shan wanted to argue but opted not to. Arguing would cause this beast not to teach his secrets.

If he had to be obedient for a little while, then he could do that. Shan went underneath the waterfall and closed his eyes. As he sat there, he concentrated on his desire for power.

“Whatever you are doing, stop it. Focus on the nature. Focus on the water. Feel its power run through you. The whole world is power and possesses it in far higher quantities than us humans do. Sage mode is the ability to harness that power without any issues. To do so, one must focus intently. If you fail, the nature energy will overwhelm your body. You will become nothing more than a statue in the graveyard beneath the waterfall.” Radi preached.

Shan didn’t open his eyes, but he thought about what he had seen when he had come upon the large waterfall. He hadn’t realized it at first but there were an awful lot of statues in the waterfall. They were all meditating precisely as he was. That was disconcerting, but shan wasn’t about to give up.

He continued to sit there with eyes closed. Calm and peacefulness washed over him for the first time in his life and…Shan felt at one with the world. He pulled a little bit of energy in. Just a touch.

He didn’t turn into a statue.
