Truth To Hardwork X2 [Quest X 2 + Training]

Shan paced around in his room. The training dummy sat where he set it up. He had asked Scarlett to come in and make some modifications to the dummy and – man – was it set up for combat. The thing appeared to be wearing Anbu gear – where she got that Shan would never understand – and had some very obvious weapon placements. The idea was that Scarlett would have placed some traps on the dummy and that Shan needed to avoid being hit by traps as he worked to disarm and subdue the dummy. Of course, it wasn’t a live person so it wouldn’t work quite as well as if it were…but, it should still be good training.

Shan’s eyes lit up and he got to work. As he approached, Shan accidentally hit a trip wire, but he was able to see it move and managed to duck as a kunai flew from the dummy. As he approached, Shan become more and more aware of the traps that were in place. Eventually, he reached the dummy and grabbed the kunai from its sheath.

The first task of his training exercise was successfully completed. This task was relatively simple, but he had many more set up for him before this was all done.

Shan paced around the dummy – watching it. He had told Scarlett to place difficult traps on it. None of the ones so far had seemed particularly difficult. As he paced, a panel popped open on the Dummy.

Inside this opening, there was a note. There are numerous puzzles within the dummy. The last one will disable the bomb. Good luck!

That was all it said. Shan’s mouth fell open. The dummy was going to explode…wasn’t Scarlett supposed to just be an Academy Student like himself. Still, the challenge was interesting. Shan reached in and pried the paper away so that he could get to work.

The first puzzle was simple. It required Shan to rearrange letters to spell a word. The word was obvious since he knew Scarlett. It spelled out Baka. Well, moving on from the challenge, Shan went into the second one with gusto. This one was slightly more difficult. Shan stared at the puzzle pieces. He could see the disarming switch behind the puzzle, but he dared not break through the puzzle to get to it lest that trigger the explosion. He couldn’t have very much time left.

“What am I ?” Shan asked aloud, reading the last line of the puzzle aloud. Something about the puzzle seemed familiar. Was it an old story from Suna…something about a sphinx….”Human!”

Shan exclaimed the last word in triumph as he rearranged the puzzle pieces. When they were in the correct spot, he heard a clicking noise and the puzzle slid aside to reveal the disarming switch. Shan flipped the switch and breathed a sigh of relief.

As Shan finished disarming the bomb, he sat down and tried to relax. It hadn’t been very long since he had met Scarlett and they had robbed the bank together – but they were becoming fast friends. Well, friends in the drive each other to get strong enough to take whatever they wanted sort of way. As if on cue, a knocking sound came from the door to his training room.

“Come in.” Hiaraishin Shandian said as he closed his eyes and felt the cool sweat drip down his forehead.

“Oh? Resting already? I take it the dismantled Training Dummy means that you’ve disarmed the bomb? Good job, I wasn’t sure you would manage to do that one.”

“Oh? You wanted me to die, then?” Shan said without opening his eyes. The cool breeze flowed in through the window and around his body as he sat there. His muscles relaxed.

“Kill? Well, not really but if you did then that just meant you weren’t strong enough. Anything for strength, right?” Scarlett asked. Shan couldn’t see her but he could almost picture the red head putting her hands on her voluptuous hips. She was a few years Shan’s senior and seemed even older. It was strange, but Shan accepted it.

“I don’t think that task had anything to do with my strength but had more to do with my brain.” Shan said, eyes snapping open. They weren’t the Raidengan, but his normal eyes.

“Yeah, but a shinobi’s strength doesn’t just lie in their ability to punch things really hard or shoot really cool lightning blasts from their eyes.” Scarlett said. Shan was right in that she had her hands on her hips. She still stood in the doorway, which led to the rest of the house. The room he was in was spacious as it was designed to train the formidable eye abilities of the Hiraishin clan. The center of the room was where they had placed the training dummy.

“Fair enough. What should we train next?” Shan asked without rising. His friend cocked her eyes at him.

“Don’t act like it is up for discussion. I’ve got plans for you.”

“Oh? And what would those plans be?” Shan asked as he slowly rose and began to stretch. He needed to get stronger. For himself. “Besides, why would I care about what a Shinobi’s strength is. Do we want to call ourselves that?”

“If you don’t want to be a shinobi, then why attend the Academy?” Scarlett raised her eyebrows at him. In response, Shan only shrugged.

“They do have adequate teachers sometimes. It’s helpful to become a ninja in name. It will allow me to access sources of power that I can’t even imagine right now.” Shan said as he walked over to his friend. Well, maybe friend was too strong of a word. Ally. Yes, ally worked. They would get strong together.
